Comparison of Novel Seismic Protection Devices to Attenuate the Earthquake Induced Energy

This study addresses an alternative use of viscous dampers (VDs) associated with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) as innovative seismic protection devices. For this purpose, 4-, 8- and 12-story steel bare frames were designed 6.5 m equal span length 4 story height. Thereafter, they seismically improved by mounting the VDs BRBs in three patterns, namely outer bays, inner all bays over frame heights. The structures modeled using SAP 2000 software evaluated nonlinear time history analyses subjected to six natural ground motions. responses investigated for lateral displacement, interstory drift, absolute acceleration, maximum base shear, roof displacement. results clearly indicated that reduced demands significantly compared frame. Moreover, all-bay pattern performed better than others.
